1903 World Series

 For the first time in professional baseball history, the pennant winners of the American and National Leagues were set to compete to determine which team was the best in the world.  The Pittsburgh Pirates were seen by almost everyone as the favorites to defeat the "lesser" Chicago White Sox, but fans of the Sox were certainly unwilling to give up without a fight. Only one thing was certain as fans entered South Side Park before the first game; history was going to be made.

1903 Baseball Preview

It is the dawn of a new era of baseball as the 1903 season begins.  It appears as if any animosity between the American and National Leagues has been resolved.  There now appears to be a working relationship and a hopeful lasting peace between the two leagues.  The end result of this peace is an American League team moving to New York City, as well as the start of a championship series between the two pennant winners at the end of the season.  Which teams are seen as the favorites to reach that series?  The experts have been polled, and the results, as well as other news of the offseason, are below.

1902 Major League Baseball End of Season Review

At the end of the 1902 baseball season, representatives from the American and National Leagues met to discuss the future of professional baseball, as well as the possibility of the two leagues working together.  After several days of meetings, it appears as if a groundbreaking decision has been reached.  At the conclusion of the 1903 regular season, the league champions from the American and National League will meet in a best of nine game series to determine professional baseball's champion.  Per the terms of the agreement, American League owners have agreed to immediately cease the poaching of players from National League clubs, while National League owners have agreed to relax their restrictions on American League teams operating in National League cities.

With this incredible announcement in hand, let's look back at the 1902 season and see which teams may be favored to play for the championship of baseball next season.

The History of Baseball: 1881-1890

Baseball's second decade showed that the sport was going to be able to evolve and thrive.  New teams reached the top of the National Association, and additional rivalries were born as a result.  The pitching boom of the 1870s evolved into an offensive explosion in the middle of the decade, but there were still several pitchers that found success.  As the 1880s came to a close, it became more certain than ever that baseball had become part of the fabric of the United States, and would continue to be ingrained there for the foreseeable future.
